Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019!

That’s right, it’s another 2018 review all up in your face as if you can resist though. I wanted to take this opportunity to look back on the year but, also to look at my post last year and compare.

2018 was a year where I really thrived with photography. At the beginning of the year, I spoke about how photography had become a chore for me in the past and that has not been the case this year. I’ve surrounded myself with creative individuals and tried to experiment with new techniques and styles. It has been amazing meeting new creatives and shooting, I am so proud of everything I have shot this year!

2018 has been a rollercoaster year for me personally, I didn’t get that tattoo I mentioned this time last year (Internally screams), but I have travelled all over the place, from Croatia to Hamburg it’s been a big adventure. My own mentality this year has been, it’s not selfish to be selfish, and I will go into why below. Enjoy my yearly breakdown

January 2018

One of my New Year resolutions last year was to complete a 52 week project, and I actually stuck to it. I originally wanted to take inspiration from Rosie Hardy’s fairytale pictures, but the more I got into this the more I realised that wasn’t my style and it’s ok to embrace that! The project allowed me to use my camera in day to day life which is definitely something I need to continue this year.

February 2018

Going to get a bit deep here, back in February I started hypnotherapy. A few people had recommended that I give it a go, and in my bid for a calmer and happier life I gave it a chance. The experience is always personal to everyone and I won’t touch on what I went through but it did allow me to take a step back and see things from a completely different perspective. This idea that in your mind the world really does revolve around you and if you’re not enjoying it or feel you need to change something then hunt that something down because it’s not selfish to be selfish. Whether you seek help for anything from your mentality to physicality, you are number one. Also, it’s not a bad thing to say NO.

March 2018

Snow landscape photo

The UK experienced some weird ass weather this year and the snow was just insane, as we all know we are never prepared for it and being stuck in the house for four days drives me insane.

April 2018

This year has been a mad year for photo shoots, I’ve been so grateful to all the lovely and unique people i’ve met along the way.

May 2018

Bald model framed by wooden windows and blossoms

In May I turned 23 and I treated myself to the Canon 5D MK IV, it’s been a dream of mine to own this camera and I am so proud that I took the plunge. It’s been an adventure learning how to use this camera and I am constantly learning.

June 2018

One of the biggest things (for me) is I travelled to Hamburg with Lilly A weekend adventure around the city, this was the first time I’ve travelled without my family or my partner. After this, I got the travel bug-ish. I’m still a bit of a home girl though, you’re never going to see be backpacking across Europe I promise.

July 2018

Week_27_no_filter

This Summer’s weather was insane too, we had a period of serious heatwaves and on one of the hottest days of the year, I decided to do two shoots in Bournemouth, on the beach. The tan lines are still there. In all seriousness, though it’s important to look after yourself in a shoot, if your a model OR the photographer, it’s easy to forget but believe me you will regret it.

August 2018

For BOWO creative I created a facebook live all on tips for new businesses on how to improve your photography! My arm never ached so much.

September 2018

20180911_113300

I told you I caught the travel bug! I visited the gorgeous island of Korcula, the perfect temperature at this time of year and just what I needed. Although it does look beautiful it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting at certain points with our Boat that broke down in the ocean, some beautiful sunburn and a stinking cold that left me sniffing by the pool, although if you have to sniff anywhere, a pool is a great place to do it.

October 2018

This month my beautiful nephew was born and oh my god he’s adorable. That is all.

November 2018

Week_43_bare_trees

A weekend in Amsterdam, I’m very lucky in that my partner is very supportive of my photography, he is my number one fan (I hope), and we spent 5 hours one day finding the perfect Canal shot.

December 2018

December has been all about friends and family, they are incredibly important to me and I’ve spent this month sharing moments with all the people important to me.

So what am I aiming for in 2019? Well this year for me is all about getting Beth Roach Photography off the ground and I cannot wait for the challenge, I have spent the last few months putting price lists together and themes for 2019 so keep your eyes peeled.

What are your plans for 2019?

52 Week Project – November

2018 is almost over, isn’t that insane?! It feels like yesterday it was January! What has been your favourite thing about 2018?

Week 42 – Remember, remember the 5th Of November

red_head_with_sparkler
Week 42 – Remember, remember the 5th Of November

I don’t know if this week’s submission to my 52 week project counts but this is a re-edit of a shoot with Gemma using sparklers. A difficult shoot but I love having some time away from photos and revisiting them!

Week 43 – Bare trees and autumn leaves

Week_43_bare_trees.jpg
Week 43 – Bare trees and autumn leaves

This month, my partner and I attempted to be spontaneous and whisked ourselves away to Amsterdam where we ate lots, drank lots and got lost exploring the beautiful canals in search of ‘that shot’. I couldn’t quite work out whether we were going around in circles or we’d seen hundreds of different ones!

Week 44 – Icicles

Week_44_icicles
Week 44 – Icicles

Every year my mum and I visit Liberty’s in London to see their beautiful Christmas department. It’s a tradition that always gets me in the festive spirit, although we did stumble into a protest which wasn’t planned.

Week 45 – Instagram your self

week_45_instagram_yourself.jpg
Week 45 – Instagram your self

Is it even Instagram if you haven’t got fake glasses? Meet your photographer ladies and gentlemen!

52 Week Project – October

I don’t consciously hate this time of year as much as some. I prefer the fashion, the temperature and the celebrations that autumn bring. However, for a photographer when there’s no light it’s hard not to get a bit sad. See below my images for October for the 52 week project.

Week 38 – The anticipation

Week_38_baby_feet
Week 38 – The anticipation

I got the pleasure to shoot my nephew this week. A perk of being a photographer and aunty, there’s always willing models! However, I hope he doesn’t start to resent me as the aunty that puts me in baskets all the time!

Week 39 – The sky’s the limit

Week_39_The_skys_the_limit.jpg
Week 39 – The sky’s the limit

It’s hard to not live life with your blinkers on, I had so many ideas for this week’s topic but with the light disappearing and short turn around it’s hard to keep the creativity flowing. The reason I say we live life with blinkers on it because I commute 3 hours a day, for a very monotonous drive, however it was fun to find this sunrise, proving there’s beauty everywhere!

Week 40 – Laughter is the best medicine

Week_40_Laughter_is_the_best_medicine.jpg
Week 40 – Laughter is the best medicine

This image is quite a literal one. I’m seeing a lot of conversations about pill shaming, in this world where we constantly question our self worth I can’t believe this is something we have to face. If someone has the courage to seek help for whatever they need to make life a little better, no one should ever make them feel bad about that.

For reasurance, this image is of Vitamin C tablets.

Week 41 – Trick or Treat

Week_41_halloween
Week 41 – Trick or treat

There are many people that think the best thing about autumn is Halloween, I am not one of those people, Christmas is my thing, although pumpkin carving with the family is the best!

52 Week Project – September

Summer’s supposedly over and the daily grind commences and finding a photo a week is tough! I don’t think I could dream of the 365 project. Look below at my images from this month.

Week 34 – Back to School

Week_34_back_to_school
Week 34 – Back to School

Being an adult can be pretty sucky. However, my back to school theme was my trip to Croatia. Probably the furthest I’ve ever been abroad, this holiday was full of fun and experiences. From getting stranded on a questionable boat in the middle of the ocean, finding our own little nook on a beach and attempting to crash a boat party.

Week 35 – Tie A Ribbon

Week_35_tie_a_ribbon
Week 35 – Tie A Ribbon

Nothing makes me happier than photographing a wedding. It is such a privilege, and I have to say on the day is very stressful but, seeing their reaction to the images makes it all worthwhile.

Week 36 – Wacky Races

Week 36 – Wacky Races

So this is my mother. I know what you’re thinking, doesn’t look very wacky, does it? But, this woman doesn’t drive, and the fact she managed to race me on her own without a car, I applaud.

Week 37 – Harvest festival

week_37_harvest_festival
Week 37 – Harvest festival

This post is very nostalgic, with week 37 being no exception. The Harvest festival used to be a big time for my school, I personally loved wrapping the boxes. It’s a shame I’m not that good at wrapping for Christmas. Here is my take on the Andy Warhol pop art trademark of the Cambell’s Soup.

52 Week Project – August

This summer has been the hardest shooting outside, I have had so many sunburns, you have to remember to look after yourself while shooting as well as models! This month I had the pleasure of shooting some lovely people!

Week 31 – Living

A great night photographing Destination Groove at their function gig, here’s to more fun captures like this in the future.

Week 32 – It started with a kiss

Family photoshoots like the one below couldn’t have been more fun-filled and full of colour. That’s what a shoot is like when you book with me, I try to capture the fun and vibrancy of your family.

I would spend my days hunting down locations like the one below! *Heart Eyes*

52 Week Project – July

July.

The month I got the worst sunburn of my life. Tried my hand at event photography and harassed a lot of friends to model for me

Week 27 – No Filter

Week 27 – No Filter

An adventure down to Bournemouth saw me in portrait heaven. From Carousels to arcades, I had been waiting for a shoot like this for a long time.

Week 28 – Digital

Week_28_digital
Week 28 – Digital

Digital is a hot topic wherever you look. It feels like the world revolves around phones and social media but who remembers the old TV static. It used to be almost hypnotising.

Week 29 – Private

Week 29 - Private

It makes me so sad that so many beautiful places are blocked off to the public and left to decay.

Week 30 – Pure

Week 30 – Pure

Moments captured like this are pure and untainted.

52 Week Project – June

Some of the hottest weather on record began this month, and man alive this project is tough. To keep inspiration flowing, and to not feel constrained by the topics is so hard! See my 52-week submissions for June

Week 23 – Sub

Week_23_sub
Week 23 – Sub

In the world of photography, this title could cover all manner of sins. Literally. So here’s a boat! I live in a gorgeous part of Wiltshire and this challenge has really allowed me to see it in a new light.

Week 24 – Joint

Week 25 – Enough

Week 25 – Enough

This year has been a huge year for me, in a selfish way I have been focussing on myself, what I need in life. And this particular week, myself and the life of Lilly travelled to Hamburg for the weekend. I mean actually got on the plane without a suitable adult and just went to a different country. That’s enough spontaneity for a while.

Week 26 – Burp

Week_26_burp
Week 26 – Burp

I hated this topic.

52 Week Project – May

Did somebody say it’s summer? A bit delayed with last month’s 52-week project. This is a hard project to be doing but I don’t think I’m deterred yet! Although I think we’re far from the 365 project, photographers that can even commit to them deserve a medal.

Week 18 – Different Perspective

Ruined building with tower
Week 18 – Different Perspective

This was a hard one, a lot can be said for perspective, are we talking architecture photography or a different angle? For me, a different perspective was discovering this old building in the town near why I grew up. It’s a gorgeous building I never knew existed but must have driven past a thousand times, a fresh perspective on somewhere I thought I knew. The golden hour helped the beauty too.

Week 19 – Inbetween

Lots of speakers
Week 19 – Inbetween

Game of Tetris anyone?

Week 20 – Layers

Layers of paint
Week 20 – Layers

Now it’s supposed to be Summer, so layers don’t spring polo necks and tights to mind, so here’s some paint.

Week 21 – Pose

Bald model framed by wooden windows and blossoms
Week 21 – Pose

I have been dying to shoot with some blossoms and it makes me so sad that they’ve almost disappeared now. This week’s submission is from my first shoot with the canon 5d mk IV and Rosa Fury. I love the contrast between a derelict bus stop and pretty blossoms.

Week 22 – Curve

Records in jukebox
Week 22 – Curve

There’s something about retro things isn’t there? I find myself loving pin-up shoots, no matter how many time’s they’re done before, and anything 50’s – that includes an old jukebox. CD’s fitting my Week 22 theme perfectly.

52 Week Project – April

We are now into the swing of May, and what I can hopefully say is the start of summer! This month has been a hard one to keep up with photographing once a week, but we’ve got there. Have you taken on any projects this year? If so what helps you stay motivated. Take a look below at all the images submitted for my 52-week project in April.

Week 12 – Horrify Me

Image of a fake owl in a tree
Week 12 – Horrify Me

Let me just start this off with the worst week possible. In our female photography group, we have a mixture of skills, some are in portraiture and some are in landscapes. However, for this week our theme was horror. I hate horror films, I hate horror and I certainly cannot shoot it. It just doesn’t inspire me at all!

So for this week is a picture of a fake owl. Now you might think why is this scary? Well, owls are lovely creatures, very majestic I’m not denying that at all, but when I was a teenager, myself and a group of friends decided to watch the Fourth Kind, and ever since I’ve never been able to trust the things!

Week 13 – Free week

Ginger model portrait in sheer floral dress
Week 13 – Free Week

We all lose a bit of mojo now and then so for this week we had free reign on what we could submit. This week’s photo is of Gemma Huh, a model from London I had the pleasure of photographing at Pozers Studio, Cricklade.

Week 14 – Friendship

photoshoot_in_record_shop
Week 14 – Friendship

Now, this girl I have known for almost 8 years. We recently got back in touch and I got the pleasure of photographing her in a record shop in Wiltshire. If that’s not friendship, I don’t know what is.

Week 15 – Abstract

Abstract portrait of woman through a glass
Week 15 – Abstract

We all know I’m a portrait photographer and abstract really isn’t my thing, but I gave it a go with a glass and some sunshine!

Week 16 – Spring

Landscape of the rapeseed flower
Week 16 – Spring

What tells me spring is on the way is Yellow fields and Bluebells. On my commute to work, I am surrounded by golden landscapes for miles. The smell is god awful but I do think they look gorgeous.

Week 17 – Frame

Portrait of model framing her eye with her finger
Week 17 – Frame

Getting back to what I know and love with portraits with Eli. My biggest aim for 2018 was to get out of my comfort zone and this girl just does it. Surround yourself with creative individuals so your life will never be boring.

52 Week Project – March

Can you believe that March has been and gone? I mean seriously, yesterday felt like I was counting in the new year, not four months ago! Now this month has been very strange, I’ve been snowed in for three days and then met some lovely new people, it snowed again and then I ate my weight in Mini Eggs. It’s not been a bad one and here are my March photo’s to prove it. March has been a quiet month for me while I prioritise other aspects of my website other than blogging but the 52-week project has continued!

I have to say 52-week photography projects are hard, but the rewards are worth it! All topics chosen are set by our photography group leader Alley, a studio owner who’s imagination is as vast as her creative skills. It knows no bounds.

Week 9 – Cold

Snow landscape photo
Week 9 – Cold

What it says on the tin. In March 2018 the world watched as the UK lost it over the freezing temperatures it was facing, now I am a complete wuss, I stayed indoors for most of it, managed to scare myself driving and spent most of it in my PJ’s. However, I managed to go out and brave the chill for the 9th week of the project. Pretty much what it says on the tin here. It was cold.

Week 10 – Bonkers

Red and blue fashion editorial portrait with blue tracksuit and red back drop
Week 10 – Bonkers

POPPERS ARE BACK PEOPLE! Have you seen them? The 90’s trend is back with vengeance in my shoot with Elica. Who can say that this outfit is not bonkers? Plus, you know, it’s blue so what could be better?

For week 10 we brought a touch of glamour to Swindon! No one has ever said those words together. Ever.

Week 11 – Once Upon a Time

Week 11 – Once upon a time

This one kind of says it all really, sometimes don’t you just feel like climbing a mountain of books? It does remind me that I do not read enough!
