Andrea and Craig’s Wedding

Bride with little boy

It’s that time of the week again! I will be doing a shoot with the beautiful Abi soon so that’s something to look forward to, but in the meantime, I thought I’d do a throwback to last summer on my first wedding that I photographed on my own.

Thanks to the lovely Andrea and Craig Oxley who kindly put their trust in me to take the photos on their special day. This had to be one of the most nerve-wracking but enjoyable experiences I’ve had so far with my camera. Everyone listened and were so lovely and welcoming, pretty much what every photographer could wish for!

These few were just some little touches, also, a film themed wedding cake starring all their favourite films, how awesome?

50’s Gangster Themed Photoshoot

I have been completely overwhelmed with the number of reactions I got from The Photography Show post, especially when Rankin tweeted to me, I just couldn’t believe it. So thank you to you all that read it, and even more thanks to those that have come back for more! I was very disappointed that I don’t think I have enough photos for you all to see, so here’s some!

A few weeks ago I collaborated with a few of my friends for their media coursework, a composition to go towards a “1980’s gangster concept but in a 1950’s style”, and they have kindly given me permission to share my favourite photo’s with you all. I was very lucky to have a model, George, that listened to me and came up with some really great compositions.

However, if I had to learn something from this shoot it would keep it simple. Simple works, matches, fire and booze bottles do not, well not for a small set up in your living room anyway.

I hope you like them, I use more than one flash box occasionally, promise, but you can’t beat a bit of edge lighting in my opinion.

The Photography Show 2014

“I’m an absolute tart when it comes to lighting!” – RANKIN 2014

It’s probably a bit late to post about The Photography Show but I thought as it was such a great day, why not? Practically Christmas in fact!

On 1st of March 2014, I went to The Photography Show at the NEC, and what a show! If I was let loose and wasn’t on limited funds I’d have the entire exhibition in my bedroom! Exhibitors from Canon and Nikon to rogue Stormtroopers, it’s safe to say it included everything for everyone.

I began with a lovely little stall by The Disabled Photographers society, they were so lovely and welcoming and had all types of photography equipment of all ages and models up for grabs. This is where I happened to stumble across a Kodak Pocket Camera, for £10 he was mine! How is that possible? You can never have too many film cameras in my opinion. And they then reinforced my “lovely” opinion of them by kindly showing me how to collapse it, without laughing too much.

This is Albert – Yes, I name my Cameras.

Unfortunately for my future savings, I decided I had to go talk to the lovely people at Canon, where so many encouraging people were equipped Canons of all models. HEAVEN! I held a 1-D for the first time, one hell of a tank in comparison with Leeroy my little 1000d, and discussed how it wasn’t for me and what I should go onto instead. Which led me onto the 6D mark III. Beautiful, that is all I have to say, and with the lens I wanted it’s a worthwhile £2000.

After several laps of taking in the whole two halls, I literally bumped into someone, apologising frantically I realised who it was, RANKIN. I had bumped into my favourite photographer, then proceeded to shout “You’re Rankin!” in his face, like a complete idiot! He quickly replied with “Yes” and walked off. Being a social media slave I had to tweet my embarrassment, which I might add he “favourited”, which softened the blow a little.

Humiliated, I did another lap of the hall and came across a little pop up bookshop called Book Axis, where a lovely man helped me pick several books to add to my future basket and one I couldn’t leave without at a discount price called “Light it, Shoot it, Retouch it.” Full of new lighting inspiration if you’re struggling from a slight block.

A bit happier I strolled over to the Super stage where Rankin was giving his talk for an hour and a half, only two seats from the front! We had a slideshow with Fire by Kasabian in the background and went through it with Rankin explaining the motives behind each shot. Asking about tips and techniques he came out with the quote of this post of “I’m an absolute tart when it comes to lighting”, what a way to describe it, no tripods involved just one strong assistant making the light mobile. The talk began to come to a close and the security were directing us out while Rankin had just told everyone to go and see him.

After I tackled with the crowd and with “Fuck you Rankin” to be released later this year, which includes a compilation of his works with his models giving the finger, I managed to remind him that I was the one who humiliated myself, which he responded with “Yeah, I know, I just favourited your tweet, I then managed to get a “Fuck you” selfie, and got him to sign my Hunger magazine.

Safe to say I was overwhelmed!

Body Image Photography Project

I thought I would start my official posting with a couple of throwbacks, as it’s Thursday. These are mostly my favourites from the past year of A Level, if you have any comments please let me know! (Please note: suggestive nudity)

So these were my first shoots for my A Level Unit 3: Personal investigation. I started looking into women’s body image and how we all feel about ourselves, as a baseline for my unit. I was very lucky to have the gorgeous company of Danni, who I ran up to with the idea of getting her to “strip back” thinking she would say no, but instead she was full of beans for the idea. This filled me with fear knowing I had her trust and I was basically telling her to take her top off in the college studio, which was terribly awkward when we heard a bellowing laugh from the next room, but after I was so happy about how they turned out, and how much fun we had.

I then went on to focus on our opinions of ourselves, even the more obscure ones. Like, you hear “I’m feeling fat today” quite a lot, which I worked with, but also when do you hear someone hating their body for being too skinny? It’s hidden more. (These are just my opinions that sparked my inspiration, no offence intended.)

So as a result I graffiti’d all over Danni’s body, poor girl, and used the same low key set up. (I do love my shadows!)

The one below then became my favourite and one of my final pieces for the Unit.

Hello

Low key black and white self portrait in studio holding camera

So I’m Beth, and this is the blog I’ve decided to start, involving all things photography, whether that’s my images, crazy ideas or even just what I’ve been up to.

I studied Photography A-Level after loving cameras from an early age, being surrounded by the film compacts and 6×4 prints of everyday antics in the late Nineties and early Noughties as well as other inspirations I will divulge in another post.

I found as I grew up that I love people, especially after studying Psychology as well, and that quickly became apparent in my coursework, focussing mostly on Portraiture. (The only genre that was actually successful and enjoyable to me!) I love the studio and location shoots, whatever works for what I and my model want to achieve, which is where I’m very lucky by knowing lots of people who are, usually, creative and understanding to what we are working towards. (Unless it’s completely unrealistic and unachievable!)

After finishing my A Level Photography course six months ago I’ve suffered hugely with Photographer’s block, finding it hard to come up with new ideas, or even keeping motivated with a shoot. This is where this blog comes in!

I want to start it to try to keep motivated, keep my thoughts/ideas organised and also share my photo’s with anyone and everyone that’s reading this.

Please feel free to leave any feedback, advice and ideas that you think might work!

See you soon!

Beth.
